Self Advocacy

Self Advocacy

Hi, our names are Cyril Luke and Glayne Walker. We work for Caerphilly People First, an organisation which provides self advocacy for people with learning disabilities.

We are based in Caerphilly and encourage people with learning disabilities to speak up for themselves. We hold meetings in Caerphilly with people to find out what they want from their lives.

We do this through the use of Person Centred Planning and we have also worked closely with Caerphilly County Borough Council in Planning Meetings such as: The Strategic Planning group (which we have 3 members on), and other groups such as: Daytime Opportunities, Accommodation and Advocacy Standards.

We also work with Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations (GAVO), where our Adviser is an Executive Member.

Our members take part in conferences where they give presentations on Person Centred Planning, Interviews, Accommodation and lifestyles. Also, 2 of our members serve on the Learning Disability Implementation Advisory Group. This group advises the Welsh Assembly Government on issues relating to people with learning disabilities.

Our Chair, Glayne Walker is also the Chair of All Wales People First and, along with Cyril Luke is a trustee on the Learning Disability Wales Management Group. Last year, 4 members from Caerphilly People First took part in the review of the BBC Disability Equality Scheme. This scheme has now been updated as a result of the consultation with these members.
