Draft Good Practice Framework for People with a Learning Disability requiring Planned Secondary Care

There is strong evidence that people with a learning disability have poorer general health and more specific health needs than the general population. Despite increased health needs people with a learning disability do encounter problems in accessing health services.

Welsh Ministers say they are committed to improving the health of people with a learning disability and improving their experiences of secondary care.

This consultation seeks views on a draft Good Practice Framework for People with a Learning Disability requiring Planned Secondary Care. The framework has been drawn up by Public Health Wales (formerly National Public Health Services for Wales) at the request of the Welsh Assembly Government.

The framework recommends the use of a simple hospital information system which includes some essential information about the person with a learning disability. It also recommends a Risk, Dependency and Support Assessment which should be undertaken before the person enters hospital.
